Trees uprooted, roofs blown off during freak storm in Penang

GEORGE TOWN: Several trees were uprooted and roofs of stalls were blown off in Bayan Lepas and Batu Maung during a freak storm in the wee hours of Saturday (July 22).

The Penang Island City Council (MBPP) emergency squad which sprang into action managed to clear the fallen trees and removed them from several roads.

"The public has been warned to be careful when they are outside the house and always take care of their family members during the bad weather," said the council on Facebook.

It said for any complaints on floods, landslides and fallen trees, the public can contact the MBPP hotline at 04-263 7000/04-263 7637 or WhatsApp to 016-200 4082.

Pictures of roofs of several stalls along Batu Maung went viral on social media, showing broken canopies, makeshift walls and cooking utensils strewn all over.

Meanwhile, the Public Works Department (PWD) had to carry out temporary work repairs on the Jalan Sultan Azlan Shah flyover after pictures of uneven surfaces appeared on social media, putting the lives of vehicle owners, especially motorcyclists in danger.

Bayan Baru MP Sim Tze Tzin said he received a call about the uneven surfaces and immediately alerted the PWD.

"The department did some temporary resurfacing and its technical team will look into the issue," added Sim in a Facebook post on Saturday (July 22).
