MMEA nabs duo for encroaching in Johor waters to catch sea cucumbers

MERSING: Two Vietnamese men have been arrested by the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) for illegal entry into Johor waters.

MMEA Mersing Zone Maritime Cmdr Suhaizan Saadin said the men were detained at 6.30pm on Monday (July 17), 0.23 nautical miles (400m) north-west of Pulau Tengah.

"An MMEA patrol team was conducting a routine operation in the area when they saw a fibreglass boat... (with) no registration number.

"Checks found that it was crewed by two Vietnamese men aged 35 and 36," he said in a statement on Tuesday (July 18).

He added that both men did not have valid documents and an inspection of the boat found diving equipment.

It is believed they were in the area to catch sea cucumbers.

"The duo, along with their boat, were then brought to the Teluk Gading Maritime Jetty for further action," Suhaizan said.

The case is being investigated under the Fisheries Act 1985 for possessing unlicensed fishing equipment, the Immigration Act 1959/63 for entering the country without valid travel documents, and the Merchant Shipping Ordinance 1952 for operating a boat without a licence.
