KOTA KINABALU: A British teenage climber had to be carried down from Mount Kinabalu after she suffered acute mountain sickness (AMS) and hypothermia, said the Sabah Fire and Rescue Department.
The 17-year-old and her family were on their way down from the summit when she started feeling unwell due to the two conditions on Sunday.
The department’s assistant director of operations Hamsa Isnurdini said her guide then called the mountain search and rescue team (Mosar) for help.
“An emergency call about the incident at the Panalaban sick bay was received at around 1.45pm and the Mosar responded to it,” he said in a statement. Other rescuers from Sabah Parks and mountain guides were also part of the operation, he added.
Prior to her being brought down from the mountain, the girl was given oxygen assistance and emergency blankets as a preliminary treatment, said Hamsa.
“She was placed on a Robinson stretcher before they made their way down to the base.
“She was sent to Ranau Hospital,” he said, adding that she was reported to be in a stable condition. Her rescue operation ended at 7.42pm, he said.
