Learn from PAP, Boo urges DAP leaders

JOHOR BARU: DAP leaders should take a leaf from Singapore's People's Action Party (PAP) where its leader was instructed to go on leave due to a corruption investigation, says Dr Boo Cheng Hau.

The former Johor DAP chief said in order for Malaysia to achieve "first-class" status and a more efficient government, the party should first look inwards.

"If Malaysia is ever going to be a first-class economy, DAP must walk the talk and pioneer reforms.

"Any leader being investigated for corruption should take leave from his party and official duties.

"DAP should learn from Singapore's PAP government which has had zero tolerance for corruption and leaders or ministers involved," he said in a statement on Thursday (July 13).

Dr Boo added that after a leader is charged in court for corruption, the individual should resign from the party and public positions which could allow them to pressure authorities.

"One has to be courageous enough to account for all the responsibilities individually and step aside.

"Even if he makes mistakes, I believe history will remember him for his courage to shoulder the responsibility," he said, adding that he felt the need to weigh in on the matter after receiving requests from his fellow party members.

In March 2022, Dr Boo, who is also former Skudai assemblyman, called for Lim Guan Eng to step down as DAP chairman due to his corruption charges.

On Wednesday (July 12), Singapore Transport Minister S. Iswaran was reported to be assisting the Corrupt Practices Investigation Bureau (CPIB) with an investigation into a case.

Iswaran was reportedly being put on leave while investigations proceed.
