PETALING JAYA: PAS leaders want authorities to investigate the DAP chairman over his alleged remarks that Perikatan Nasional will destroy Buddhist or Chinese temples in Penang if the coalition takes over the state government.
Perikatan Youth chief Ahmad Fadhli Shaari said the remarks, if true, were highly offensive and meant to scare non-Malay voters during the state elections.
"Police reports will be filed nationwide to express our protest about the behaviour of this DAP leader," he said in a statement on Sunday (July 9).
Lim Guan Eng has denied making claims that Perikatan will destroy Buddhist or Chinese temples in Penang if it took over the state government.
His denial comes after a portal quoted a China Press report where Lim had allegedly said non-Muslim lifestyles in Penang will be banned if the “Green Wave” arrived in the state.
“A speech I gave in Mandarin was spun to give the impression that there are quarters who want to demolish Buddhist and Chinese temples. This is not true.
“I am very sorry that some irresponsible parties have deliberately twisted my speech and portrayed it as if it were fuelling religious and racial sentiments,” he said in a statement on Saturday (July 8).
PAS information chief Khairil Nizam Khirudin expressed concern over Lim's remark, saying that it could jeopardise racial unity.
"PAS strongly condemns the Islamaphobic statements brought by the DAP leader," he said.
"We hope that the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) will take stern action against those who play up 3R (race, royalty, religion) issues," said Khairil.
Previously, both sides of the political divide have pledged not to play up issues related to the 3Rs in the upcoming state elections.
The Election Commission had announced that the six states would go to the polls on Aug 12, with nominations set for July 29 and early voting on Aug 8.
