Muda sells anything from shoes to otak-otak to raise funds

PETALING JAYA: Despite warnings of a poor showing when it decided to go it alone in the coming state elections, Muda is soldiering on and thinking out of the box to raise funds for its campaigns.

From selling shoes, services and even otak-otak, the party led by president Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman will be conducting a fully digital fundraising campaign to raise funds.

The Muar MP himself is selling otak-otak online.

“We’re the underdogs here and we need to think outside the box. We will be having fundraising activities by selling items over various social media online marketplaces.

“To ensure it is not just a Syed Saddiq initiative, members will also be carrying out their own crowdfunding initiatives, with the collections deposited into Muda’s official bank accounts,” he told a press conference yesterday.

He said they were confident of the crowdfunding efforts, adding that they had previously raised about RM3mil through crowdfunding to run the party’s day-to-day operations.

At the same time, the money is also used to provide welfare and support to the underprivileged, he said.

“Muda has always been a party reliant on small public donations.

“Even during my first time contesting for the Muar parliamentary seat, I was largely reliant on crowdfunding.

“This approach shows we are indebted to the masses and not a few.

“We are confident crowdfunding works as we believe that the average Malaysian would love to see a country that is multiracial, diverse, moderate and policy centred,” Syed Saddiq said.

He added that Muda was targeting to contest fewer than 10% of the seats up for grabs in the state elections.

“To contest all 245 seats is a Herculean task. Each seat also needs a deposit of about RM8,000 and this does not include other campaign material such as flags and bunting among others.

“Campaigning is not about who has the most flags, banners or bunting, but it is about who can offer the best policies, candidates, ideologies and alternatives to move Malaysia forward,” he said.

Selangor, Negri Sembilan, Penang, Kedah, Kelantan and Terengganu are expected to hold their state elections in August.
