Govt assets exceed RM1 trillion

JOHOR BARU: Assets of the Federal Government are at an estimated value of more than RM1 trillion so far and calculation is still ongoing to determine the final figure, says Deputy Finance Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan (pic).

This RM1 trillion amount does not include assets owned by the Federal Government abroad, which have not been evaluated so far, he said.

“There are also assets in the form of plants and machinery that have yet to be assessed,” he told reporters after visiting the office of the Johor Valuation and Property Management Department office yesterday.

He hoped that the final value of the assets would be more than the country’s RM1.5 trillion national debt.

Ahmad Maslan said the Accountant-General’s Department and the Valuation and Property Management Department had been evaluating the assets since 2013.

The process, he said, had been going on for about 10 years.

“We do not know how long more will be needed to get the final figure but it will be sped up so that we will know the total value of our assets,” he added.

On a separate matter, Ahmad Maslan reminded recipients of the e-Belia Rahmah programme to be wary of scammers who claimed they could help to convert the credit into cash.

“Recipients are not allowed to convert the credit into cash nor are they allowed to do peer-to-peer transfer of the credit.

“This has been made clear in the FAQ (frequently asked questions) in the ministry’s portal,” he said.

The e-Belia Rahmah programme, which is meant to help Malaysians aged 18 to 20 and full-time students of institutions of higher learning, will credit a one-off payment of RM200 to eligible recipients via selected e-wallets.

News reports have emerged that some students had been duped by scammers on social media.

“We would like to remind youths not to fall prey to scammers, especially on social media,” he said.

Otherwise, he said they would end up losing the entire sum.

“The programme is part of our effort to encourage cashless transactions and to support local small and medium enterprises (SMEs),” he said.

Ahmad Maslan said students from Institute of Teacher Education (IPG) were not eligible for e-Belia Rahmah as they were already receiving monthly allowances of RM450.
