Nine errant firemen in Perak face the heat

IPOH: Nine personnel from the Perak Fire and Rescue Department have been summoned to the department’s disciplinary committee, with one of them dismissed from service, says state department director Sayani Saidon.

She said the sacked personnel was allegedly involved in a khalwat (close proximity) case, while another is facing trial in court for allegedly falsifying documents.

She said seven cases involved drug abuse, with three department personnel currently undergoing rehabilitation with the National Anti-Drug Agency (AADK) and four others currently on trial.

“The department will not compromise with its personnel involved in disciplinary cases,” she said at a press conference at the department headquarters in Meru Raya here yesterday.

Sayani said one of the major challenges facing the state fire and rescue department is reducing disciplinary issues among its personnel.

“Random urine tests are carried out at all fire stations in the state. Anyone found to be involved in suspected drug abuse will be referred to the AADK for rehabilitation.

“If the personnel continue with their bad behaviour, we will not hesitate to take disciplinary action, including terminating their services,” she added.

On a separate matter, Sayani said her department will hold discussions with local authorities to increase water safety infrastructure and awareness at recreational sites in Perak.

The discussions will also include operators of tourist spots in the state.

Sayani said the meeting will touch on raising awareness as well as conducting spot checks at the sites.

“I have instructed all our station chiefs to locate the hotspots and monitor the said areas.”
