Only 300 PPR units available for 3,000 applications annually, PM tells Parliament

KUALA LUMPUR: Of the 3,000 applications made for Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) People's Housing Project (PPR) units on average annually, there are only 300 homes that can be offered to eligible applicants, says Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

The Prime Minister said this was a serious issue, adding that he was emphasising a policy that all approved housing or real estate projects must build affordable residences.

“If we continue with what is currently happening, where there are 3,000 applicants for 300 homes annually, it does not solve the problem.

“I will also be asking DBKL to adjust the criteria for those eligible to own PPR homes to allow those whose partners are foreign nationals to own these homes,” he said during Prime Minister's Question Time on Tuesday (June 6).

Anwar was responding to a question by Fong Kui Lun (PH-Bukit Bintang) on whether the criteria set by DBKL for those eligible to rent PPR homes was too strict.

To a supplementary question by Datuk Mohd Suhaimi Abdullah (PN-Langkawi) on whether the government planned to streamline the large number of agencies related to housing, the Prime Minister said there were works to form several Cabinet committees to consolidate the various agencies under the two Deputy Prime Ministers.

“In the Federal Territories, for example, all agencies are streamlined to ensure the programmes do not overlap with one another,” Anwar said.

He added that there was a previous tendency to form agencies whenever an issue arose.

“This kept continuing, with the agencies also sometimes having overlapping job scopes,” he said.
