Army captain serves as inspiration to other women

A YOUNG woman realised her childhood dream recently by becoming a captain in the Malaysian army, Malaysia Nanban reported.

Ashwinidevi Shanmuganathan said it was her long-time dream to serve in the armed forces and she was happy to achieve the rank of captain, which she hoped would inspire other Malaysian women of Indian descent.

The support of her father Nagendran, a public servant, mother Tamil Selvi who is a nurse, and her fellow army officer husband A. Shanmuganathan was crucial to her success, she said.

The officer, who completed her training at Kem Mahkota in Kluang, Johor, and received her appointment last month, dedicated the promotion to her late brother Devaraj Kumaran.

Walking among other high-ranking female officers of all races as a Malaysian Indian was a proud moment, she said.
