MELAKA: A giraffe from Africa will become the latest attraction at the Melaka Zoo, says Hang Tuah Jaya Municipal Council (MPHTJ) president Datin Sapiah Haron.
The world’s tallest mammal, worth more than RM200,000, is scheduled to arrive at the zoo in time for the Hari Raya Aidilfitri holidays, she said.
Sapiah also said that the zoo has been undergoing a facelift to attract visitors, especially in the run-up to the Year of Melaka 2024 (TMM 2024), Bernama reported.
The upgrading works, involving an allocation of over RM1mil, will be carried out on the animal habitats, facilities for visitors and additional animals, among others, she revealed.
”We are in the process of replacing old or damaged animal cages, and so far have completed repair work on the Harimau Malaya and elephant cages,” she told reporters at the Masih Ada Yang Sayang programme, which saw the local council presented Raya contributions to 30 orphans, here yesterday.
Sapiah said another tourist product that would be upgraded for TMM2024 is the Melaka Bird Park in Ayer Keroh, which is scheduled to be re-opened to the public in November this year.
“We are also upgrading the entrance to Melaka to welcome tourists,” she added.
