Penang sees third fire fatality in a week


GEORGE TOWN: Penang has recorded its third casualty from a building fire within a week, the latest being a man believed to be a person with disabilities (PwD) in a two-storey shophouse blaze in Jalan Seri Bahari here on Wednesday (April 12).

The charred remains of the victim, said to be a senior citizen, were found in a bathroom on the ground floor after the fire.

It is learnt firemen received a distress call at 4.10am and when they arrived, they were informed that an occupant was trapped inside.

After the fire was put out about an hour later, firemen found the remains while inspecting the building.

The man's identity has yet to be ascertained and the body has been handed over to the police to be sent to Hospital Penang for a post-mortem.

The fire is believed to have been caused by candles as the building had no electricity supply.

On Monday (April 10), the body of a seven-year-old girl was found behind the bed in her father's room after a fire destroyed their home in Jalan Paya Terubong.

Police believe the victim, identified as G. Sri Laavanya, hid behind the bed when the fire broke out.

According to reports, her father was out at the time of the incident around 11.15pm, and her grandparents managed to escape from the burning house but could not find her.

On Tuesday (April 12), a mentally impaired woman died in a fire that gutted her single-storey house in Kampung Alma at around 5pm.

Firemen found the 43-year-old unconscious on a bed. She was pronounced dead by medical personnel at the scene.
