MB: 40% off water bills for flood victims

Every bit helps: Households affected by the floods, such as this one, will be able to enjoy discounts of up to 40% off their water bills.

ISKANDAR PUTERI: Households affected by the recent floods will be able to enjoy discounts of up to 40% on their water bills, says Mentri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi.

“Account holders affected by the recent floods will be given discounts for March and April as a way of easing the victims’ burden,” he told the state assembly here yesterday.

He said the decision was made following discussions between the state government and water supply company, Ranhill SAJ Sdn Bhd.

He also said the RM34.2mil in cash assistance would be disbursed to the heads of affected households by the end of March.

The Federal Government’s financial assistance of RM1,000 from Bantuan Wang Ihsan (BWI) and RM300 from the state government would be paid out to those affected.

“The payout in Segamat and Batu Pahat may take longer as the two locations have far more flood victims than other districts.

“The RM2,500 in Basic Necessities Assistance (BBKA) will be distributed to each head of household from early April, involving a total amount of RM60.3mil,” he added.

Onn Hafiz also said victims who lost their property grants in the floods would also get a waiver on the RM250 replacement fee.

All 10 districts in Johor were flooded following heavy rain on Feb 28, with Segamat, Batu Pahat, Muar, Kota Tinggi and Tangkak the worst hit.

More than 50,000 evacuees were recorded, with nearly 270 temporary relief centres (PPS) opened to provide them with shelter.
