Man charged with drink driving after hitting two cops


IPOH: A 30-year-old civil servant has pleaded not guilty at a Magistrate’s Court here to drink driving.

Jazvinjit Singh claimed trial after he was charged with driving under the influence, with 167mg of alcohol per 100ml of blood found in his system.

The reading was over the permitted limit of 50mg of alcohol per 100ml of blood.

According to the charge sheet, the accused at about 12.10am on March 17 drove in front of the Police Air Wing Unit Training Base guard post off Jalan Angsana here under the influence of alcohol.

He was charged under Section 45A (1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 which carries a jail term of not more than two years, and a fine of between RM10,000 and RM30,000, and disqualification from holding a driving licence for not less than two years from the date of conviction, if found guilty.

Jazvinjit, who was represented by lawyer Ranjit Singh Sandhu, asked for bail to be set at RM5,000.

Ranjit told the court this was his client’s first offence.

Deputy public prosecutor NM Moganaraj Mithra asked for bail to be set at RM8,000.

Magistrate Farah Nabihah Muhamad Dan set bail at RM7,000 with one surety, and fixed April 3 for mention.

She also ordered the accused to report to the nearest police station once a month.

The accused posted bail.

It was reported on March 17 that police arrested a man believed to be intoxicated for hitting two junior police officers at the base.

Ipoh OCPD Asst Comm Yahaya Hassan had said the man had earlier crashed his car into a guardrail near the base at 12.05am the same day.

He had said the two officers were inspecting the scene when the man hit them, and both the officers sustained light injuries and received treatment at Hospital Raja Permaisuri Bainun.
