Prices for 5G services set to drop further, says Teo

PRICES for 5G high-speed Internet are expected to be lowered with further expansion of its coverage nationwide, says Deputy Communications and Digital Minister Teo Nie Ching.

She told the Dewan Rakyat that as of Feb 28, a total of 4,363 5G sites had been developed by the government-owned Digital Nasional Bhd (DNB).

With that amount, 5G network availability has reached 54.7% coverage in populated areas, she said.

According to Teo, the current price for users was RM1.68 per (gigabyte) GB.

She said currently, the price of 5G service access was according to the rate offered by DNB through the reference access offer.

“The cost of 5G now is 30,000 per gbps/month (one gigabits per second), or equivalent to RM0.13 per GB.

“We believe with the expansion of 5G channels, the price of our Internet can be further lowered,” Teo said in reply to a question from Lim Guan Eng (PH-Bagan).

Lim had asked about the cost and quality of 5G services offered and efforts made to further reduce the prices.

He also asked about time needed to ensure 5G coverage was accessible throughout the country, including Sabah and Sarawak.

On accessibility, Teo said the overall national rollout was at 54.7%, but pointed out that for Penang, it was slightly faster at 56.6%.
