Penang Hill funicular train to shut down for scheduled maintenance in June

GEORGE TOWN: The Penang Hill funicular service is expected to shut down for its scheduled second bi-annual maintenance from June 15 to 23 and will resume operations on June 24.

The Penang Hill Corporation (PHC) said it conducts two major scheduled maintenance sessions yearly under the supervision of the engineers from the funicular manufacturer (Garaventa AG of Switzerland).

It added that the temporary maintenance shut-down is carried out twice a year, once in the beginning of the year and the other mid-year.

"PHC conducts regular checks and maintenance of its funicular system on a daily, weekly and monthly basis as well as routine inspections that are carried out after operating hours.

"This is to ensure that the funicular system is always in tip-top running condition and meets stringent safety compliance checks," it said in a statement.

PHC said that during the shutdown period, visitors may opt for the jeep service operated by the Penang Hill Jeep Service Association (012-4541255) located at Rifle Club Car Park (Penang Botanic Gardens), or use the existing hiking routes to reach the summit area of Penang Hill.
