Umno polls ongoing, no need to urge any leader to step down, says party veep

Umno Vice-President Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin speaking to the media during his visit to Universiti Teknologi Malaysia in Skudai, Johor Baru on Feb 6, 2023.

JOHOR BARU: There is no need to urge anyone to step down from their positions in Umno as the election for the party’s central posts will commence next month, says Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin.

The Umno vice-president, when asked to comment on alleged calls for Wanita chief Datuk Seri Dr Noraini Ahmad’s resignation, said the delegates can vote for who they want when the time comes.

“I believe there is no need to urge (her to step down) as the polls will come soon.

“If you do not like her, do not vote for her; what’s so difficult about that,” Mohamed Khaled, who is Higher Education Minister, told reporters during his visit to Universiti Teknologi Malaysia in Skudai here Monday (Feb 6).

On Sunday (Feb 5), a local news portal claimed that Titiwangsa Wanita Umno had urged Noraini to step down to bear responsibility and correct her alleged wrongdoings while she helmed the women’s wing.

Talk is also rife that there is a movement within Wanita to bring back former chief Tan Sri Shahrizat Abdul Jalil to compete for the wing’s top post.

The annual delegates meeting and contest for the Wanita, Youth and Puteri wings at the branch level are ongoing for 26 days from Feb 1 to 26.

After that, the polls for the three wings’ top posts will be held simultaneously on March 11 while elections for the Umno supreme council members (25 positions) at the division level will take place simultaneously on March 18 nationwide.
