IPOH: The Ipoh City Council is aiming to expand 5G coverage to 80% of its populated areas by year-end, says Datuk Rumaizi Baharin.
The Ipoh mayor said he has already instructed his officers to look into this as part of the council’s aim to turn Ipoh into a “smart green city” by 2030.
“The Federal Government has set Dec 31, 2024, for us to have 5G coverage in 80% of the populated areas here.
“We will try to expedite it and to achieve it by the end of this year,” he told a press conference after a working visit by Perak local government committee chairman Sandrea Ng and state communications committee chairman Mohd Azlan Helmi Helmi to the Ipoh Integrated Operation Centre in the Urban Transformation Centre here yesterday.
Rumaizi said almost half of the populated areas in the city already have 5G services, ahead of the “40% by the end of 2023” target set by the Federal Government.
“Starting in the middle of January this year, we have already achieved 50%. We managed to reach this about 11 months earlier than expected.”
Ng said 5G coverage in the city included the city centre, Canning Garden, Ipoh Garden, Meru, Klebang, Pasir Puteh, Gunung Rapat, Ampang and Tambun.
Mohd Azlan Helmi said the state is looking into expanding 5G coverage to Kampar and Batu Gajah as part of a “Greater Ipoh” plan for better networking.
“We will work closely with the city council and the state executive council meeting will discuss setting up a body to coordinate the development of 5G coverage in the state.”
