GEORGE TOWN: Policemen on a drug bust also found a cache of fireworks for sale worth RM408,943 at Batu Maung.

Along with a few thousand ringgit worth of ketamine and Erimin 5 pills, they stumbled upon close to 1,000 packets, boxes and bundles of fireworks meant to be sold illegally to Chinese New Year revellers.

Penang police chief Comm Datuk Mohd Shuhaily Mohd Zain said police detained three suspects aged between 26 and 45 on Jan 19 during the operation named Op Tapis.

“During the raid, police found a transparent packet containing 6.4g of ketamine worth RM960, and five red and silver foil packs containing 18 Erimin 5 pills worth RM2,700.

“We also found 81 boxes and 527 packs of various types of fireworks,” he told a press conference at state police headquarters here yesterday.

He said in a follow-up operation, police raided another nearby location and confiscated 44 sacks and 333 boxes of fireworks.

Comm Mohd Shuhaily said the fireworks were meant for sale in the local market.

He said one of the suspects was a businessman aged 46 and the other two suspects, including a foreign national, were working with him.
