Batang Kali landslide: SKJC Mun Choong PTA denies working with any third party to collect donations

PETALING JAYA: SKJC Mun Choong's parent-teacher association (PTA) says they are not working with any organisation to collect donations for families of Batang Kali landslide victims.

PTA chairman U Chin Ong said that they had received calls asking if they were cooperating with a non-governmental organisation (NGO) to collect funds.

"We do not know the name of the NGO and we were only informed of this by a well-wisher," he said, adding that they had not been able to look into the matter further.

U warned well-wishers to be careful and to verify any bank account details before donating.

"However, we have not received any reports of people donating to any account other than ours," U said after receiving a RM50,000 donation from Gadang Holdings Bhd on Thursday (Dec 22).

He said SKJC Mun Choong's administration, board of directors and PTA would continue to collect funds until Dec 26 for victims, who include six teachers and the son of the canteen operator from the school.

U said the school was grateful for all donations received so far which have come from all over the country as well as from Singapore.

He said the RM50,000 from Gadang Holdings was the largest single donation so far.

"We are grateful for their contribution. Even though money will not bring back those lost, it is at least something for their families," he said.

U added that the school would announce the total amount of donations received after Dec 26, and appoint a team to evaluate and distribute donations to families of the victims.

"The school is planning to hold a memorial service for the victims of the Batang Kali landslide once the funerals of all victims are completed, including the son of the canteen operator who is yet to be found."

Gadang Holdings representative Jenny Wai said that her colleagues whose children studied at the school were heartbroken by the tragedy.

"The six teachers were also active volunteers and loved by students, their deaths are a loss to the community.

"Another one of the victims was also the sole breadwinner of her family," Wai said.

Wai said she hoped the public and other organisations will help to support the families of those victims by contributing funds to the school.

Those who wish to donate may contact Shirley at 012-672 1468.
