Bookie booked in RM3mil drug bust

IPOH: Perak police have arrested a 37-year-old man and seized RM3mil worth of methamphetamine.

State police chief Comm Datuk Seri Mohd Yusri Hassan Basri said the man, who worked as an illegal betting bookie, was arrested at 1.40pm at Jalan Medan on Dec 7.

“We first arrested him at a nearby street before he brought us to the house he rented. At the house, we found 95 green-yellow packages with the word ‘Guan Ying Wang’ written on them.

“The packages contained 96.02kg methamphetamine that is believed to be from the northern side of Perak,” he told a press conference yesterday.

Comm Mohd Yusri said the man also had a criminal record involving drug abuse.

“We believe the drugs are being distributed for Ipoh and Klang Valley usage.

“With the amount seized, it is believed that the drugs can be used by 120,000 drug users,” he said adding that the man has been remanded for seven days until Dec 11.

He tested negative for drugs.

The case is being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drug Act 1952 which carries a mandatory death penalty, upon conviction.

Separately, during the recent special three-days Op Tapis, Perak police arrested 518 individuals involved in various drug offences.

“The operation was held from Dec 6-8 where we targeted drug haunts in Felda, hardcore poor housing programme premises, fishing piers, and private-owned farms around Perak,” said Comm Mohd Yusri.

Of those arrested, 510 were men and the remaining eight were women.

“The majority were Malaysian, while 21 were foreigners from Myanmar, Indonesia, Thailand, and India,” he said, adding that more than RM3mil worth of drugs were also seized during the operation.
