JOHOR BARU: With the next few days expected to bring more heavy rain, including thunderstorms due to the monsoon season, the Johor Fire and Rescue Department has told the public to always stay vigilant and take precautionary measures during this time.
Its acting director Mohd Rizal Buang, said that the storm that hit several parts of the city here on Wednesday should be taken as a reminder for the public to prioritise their safety in open spaces.
“The public, in particular street traders, should close their tents and their stalls before seeking shelter at buildings or premises.
“This is to avoid their tents or even stalls being blown away by strong winds. Being struck by any of these object could cause grievous harm,” he said here yesterday.
Mohd Rizal added that those stuck during a thunderstorm should also avoid seeking shelter under a tree or even structures with zinc roofs.
He said this was to avoid being crushed by fallen trees as zinc is a light material. It offers little protection, and can be easily blown away.
“Even with the current monsoon season, the department still received an average of 60 emergency calls per week.
“However, if the weather continues to bring heavy rainfall in coming days, we are prepared,” he added.
On Wednesday, a storm hit several locations around here, including Kampung Pasir and Kampung Dato Sulaiman Menteri, where the roofs of houses and business premises were blown off.
On an unrelated matter, Mohd Rizal reminded the public not to carry out open burning.
He said that the department had received several reports of open burning lately, including one incident in Kempas.
“The one in Kempas took place at an illegal dumping ground where we have been battling the fire about a week now. Even the heavy rain over the last few days is not helping us to put out the fire,” he said.
