Sabah gets RM79mil overdue sales tax

KOTA KINABALU: Following court proceedings and mitigations, Sabah collected the outstanding sales tax on oil and gas products, according to the state assembly.

State Finance Minister II Datuk Seri Masidi Manjun previously stated that a few companies, including Repsol Oil and Gas Ltd and Sea Hibiscus Sdn Bhd, did not pay the tax.

“However, on Oct 3 this year, both these companies paid up their outstanding sales tax amounting to RM79.41mil,” he said during the state assembly’s question-and-answer session yesterday.

According to him, this includes RM70.05mil from Sea Hibiscus and RM9.36mil from Repsol Oil and Gas.

Masidi said these two companies have also started paying their current taxes.

He said another company only agreed to pay up following a court decision made yesterday morning.

On a supplementary question from Tungku assemblyman Assafal Alian on why there were delays in these tax payments, he said there were legal matters that the companies disputed.

“After discussions and explanations, as well as standing firm on the position that the state will not hesitate to take legal action for failure to pay these sales tax, we managed to get the payments,” Masidi said.
