Wanita Umno backs Zahid to continue leading the party

PETALING JAYA: Wanita Umno will continue to support Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi (pic) to lead the party and restore the confidence of the rakyat, says its chief Datuk Dr Noraini Ahmad.

"Wanita Umno would like to remind all party and Barisan Nasional members to give their full trust and confidence to the president and the party leadership in efforts to restore the people's confidence," she said in a statement on Thursday (Dec 1).

Noraini said that the outcome of the 15th General Election (GE15) was a clear message from the rakyat and must be respected by Umno and Barisan members.

"We should take this as a lesson and make it a new beginning for Umno and Barisan to work on restoring the confidence of and support from the people," she said.

She added that this was not the time to pin the blame over its dismal performance in GE15 on any party or parties.

GE15 resulted in a hung Parliament with no single party or coalition managing to garner a simple majority.

Among the three major coalitions, Pakatan won 82 seats, Perikatan Nasional won 73 and Barisan won 30.

Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri'ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah then proposed the formation of a unity government to end the current political crisis.

Anwar was sworn in as the country's 10th Prime Minister before the King in Istana Negara on Nov 24.
