Loke apologises to Sarawak state govt and people

KUALA LUMPUR: DAP has openly apologised to the Sarawak state government and its people.

DAP secretary-general Anthony Loke said he made a courtesy call yesterday on Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) chairman Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, who is Sarawak Premier, and Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) president and Deputy Premier Datuk Seri Dr Sim Kui Hian, where they held a “friendly discussion”.

“I informed the Sarawak Premier that if there were any statements made by DAP leaders previously that had offended the Sarawak government and people, I, representing DAP, apologise openly,” he said in a statement.

Loke said he hoped the meeting with the two GPS leaders would open a new page for Malaysia’s political landscape towards building greater understanding and cooperation for the nation’s sake.

In another statement, DAP national chairman Lim Guan Eng also apologised to Abang Johari and the GPS-led state government.

The party’s national vice-chairman, Chow Kon Yeow, who is Penang Chief Minister, described the open apology as the right move.

“We hope that this gesture by Loke will be able to restore good faith and good feeling among the various parties in Sarawak.

“We hope that this will bring about the desired result of Pakatan Harapan and other political parties being given the blessing to form the next government,” he told reporters in George Town yesterday.
