IPOH: Perak police has denied that a riot broke out in Lenggong due to the coalition between Pakatan Harapan and Barisan Nasional to form the state government, says Comm Datuk Mohd Yusri Hassan Basri.

The Perak police chief said the TikTok photos circulating on social media were fake, as police investigation found no such gathering after the formation of the state government on Monday.

“Lenggong is the parliamentary area, where Mentri Besar (Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad) contested in the state seat (Kota Tampan), where there are circulation of such photos stating disgruntled members gathered at the Umno building as well as his (Saarani) house after the state government was formed.

“The perception given is that there is unhappiness, and it is not safe, but our investigations revealed that the photos published was that of the atmosphere outside a vote counting centre in Lenggong on the night of Nov 19.

“So the account holder of the TikTok is being traced, and we urge the public to not post unverified information, videos or photos on social media that can cause panic,” he told a press conference at the state police headquarters building here Wednesday (Nov 23).

Saarani was sworn in as the 15th Mentri Besar of Perak, at the ceremony held at Istana Iskandariah before Perak’s Sultan Nazrin Muizzuddin Shah in Kuala Kangsar on Monday.

The 10 state executive council members, consisting of assemblymen from Umno, DAP, Amanah and PKR – were sworn in before the Sultan of Perak on Nov 22.

Comm Mohd Yusri also said that roadblocks at all the districts in Perak were being carried out to ensure everything is in order, and that it was a normal routine after GE15, as well as the forming of the state government.

“Despite Perak being named one of the ‘hot states’ before the elections, the process went on well, be it from the candidates, supporters and the public in general.

“Perak is among the earliest states to form the state government, and until I feel everything is in order, the roadblocks will be carried out,” he added.

Asked if there were any racial tensions, panic or any threats, Comm Mohd Yusri, asked if anyone felt unsafe travelling, for instance travelling to Teluk Intan or elsewhere.

“So you see, if there is no such fear, it means everything is under control.

“Now that the election process is over, I urge everyone to get back to their normal routines,” he said.

Earlier, Comm Mohd Yusri said a total of 281 police reports were lodged pertaining to various offences related during the campaigning period.

He said from that figure, a total of 25 investigation papers were opened, and five people arrested, while on polling day they received 43 reports under the Election Offences Act 1954

“On polling day, we received 43 reports, while post-polling (Nov 20-22), a total of 13 reports were made,” he added.
