Penang water users urged to be prepared for disruption from Dec 2 to 4


GEORGE TOWN: Water users in the Penang mainland should stock up to prepare for a 48-hour disruption from 10pm on Dec 2 (Friday) to 10pm on Dec 4 (Sunday), says Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow.

He said the water supply in several areas on the mainland will be affected due to valve replacement works at the Sungai Dua Water Treatment Plant (WTP).

“The scheduled maintenance for the replacement of valves has to be done so the Penang Water Supply Corporation (PBAPP) can continue to provide service to consumers. We hope and appreciate that water users can understand that the replacement works are necessary,” said Chow.

“We will try our level best to get it done soonest possible and try to complete it in less than 48 hours,” he added at a press conference at the state assembly building in Lebuh Light on Wednesday (Nov 23).

On Wednesday, the PBAPP said the water supply to almost 200,000 water users on mainland Penang will be disrupted.

“Besides facilitating valve replacement works, PBAPP will also carry out repair works of 1,200mm diameter pipe in Permatang Ara and maintenance work by Tenaga Nasional Berhad at Bukit Minyak Pump House,” it read.

It said a total of 197,852 water accounts from three districts of Northern Seberang Prai, Central Seberang Prai and Southern Seberang Prai will be affected by the scheduled water supply interruption.

The areas affected are Pekan Bukit Mertajam, Jalan Kampung, Jalan Damai and Jalan Alma, Bukit Tengah, Jalan Bukit Tengah, Jalan Permatang Tinggi, Taman Pelangi, Autocity, Bukit Minyak Industrial Estate, Penang Science Park, Juru, Jalan Kulim, Machang Bubok, Taman Md Amin, Jalan Permatang Nibong, Kampung Belah 2, Taman Pauh, Taman Pauh Indah, Taman Pauh Jaya, Taman Sri Pauh, Taman Pauh Damai, Kampung Masjid Timah, Taman Perda, Taman Limau Manis, Taman Delima, Taman Seri Juru, Jalan Song Ban Kheng and Perai Industrial area, all in Central Seberang Prai.

In Northern Seberang Prai they are Taman Desa Murni, Taman Seri Murni, Taman Pengkalan Machang, Taman Janggus Jaya, Taman Naluri, Taman Pasir Indah, Bukit Merah (Jalan Kubang Semang), Kampung Bukit Pelanduk, Butterworth, Bagan Ajam, Teluk Air Tawar, Penaga, Kuala Muda, Permatang Tok Jaya, Permatang Tok Gelam, Pekan Darat and Permatang Binjai, Permatang Kuala, Permatang Pak Maras, Permatang Rambai, Permatang Bendahari, Lahar Kepar, Jalan Bagan Lalang, Sungai Puyu, Jalan Sungai Lokan, Raja Uda, Perusahaan Mak Mandin, Jalan Siram, Bagan Dalam, Acku Industrial Area, Taman Kerapu, Taman Inderawasih and Kimsa Garden.

In Southern Seberang Prai the affected areas are Perda Tech, Kampung Besar, Kampung Sungai Buaya and Kampung Sungai Kecil.

"The PBAPP will maximise the water production at the Air Itam WTP and other WTPs on the island to minimise the impact, besides maximising water storage in the reservoirs.

"To minimise the difficulties of the affected consumers, PBAPP is working together with the volunteer fire brigade coordinated by the state government to mobilise water supply assistance through tankers after 12 hours of water supply disruption
