GEORGE TOWN: The Penang state legislative assembly will have until Aug 2, 2023 to dissolve.
The Penang Chief Minister said the dissolution of the Penang state assembly would only be done at any time between May to July next year.
“After the 14th General Election (GE14), Penang’s first state assembly sitting was on Aug 3, 2018.
“According to the Constitution, the five-year period began on the date the first state assembly was held after the General Election.
“After five years, the state assembly will stand dissolved if it is not dissolved by then,” he said during a press conference at the state assembly building in Lebuh Light on Wednesday (Nov 23).
He added that different states will have different dissolution dates, as the date they carried out their first state assembly after GE14 would be different.
“We will have until August 2023 and after that, the Election Commission will fix the date within 60 days within the dissolution of the state government,” he said.
Meanwhile, Chow suggested for states which have yet to carry out their state assemblies to do it together.
However, he said he still has to talk to the PH presidential council.
“I am open to discussion if all six states agree to have the state elections together.
“It is up to Pakatan Harapan and Perikatan Nasional to decide.
“As for PH, I will bring it to the presidential council for a discussion and for them to decide the schedule for the suitable period to hold the state election,” he said.
Six states – Kelantan, Terengganu, Kedah, Negri Sembilan, Selangor and Penang – have maintained the stand that they will not be dissolved to hold state polls in 2022, along with the parliamentary polls.
