Anwar, ahead of Ahmad Faizal, nears finish line in Tambun race

IPOH: Pakatan Harapan’s Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim was ahead of Perikatan Nasional’s Datuk Seri Ahmad Faizal Azumu in the race for the Tambun parliamentary seat.

As of 11pm yesterday, Anwar was in the driver’s seat with 20,412 votes while Ahmad Faizal polled 16,238.

Barisan Nasional’s Datuk Aminuddin Md Hanafiah was at that time still trying to keep up with 9,667 votes while Gerakan Tanah Air’s (GTA) Abdul Rahim Tahir was set to lose his deposit, managing to poll only 394 votes.

In Tanjung Malim, incumbent MP Chang Lih Kang surged ahead with 13,349 votes, followed by Barisan’s Datuk Dr Mah Hang Soon (9,513), Perikatan’s Datuk Nolee Ashilin Mohammed Radzi (9,135).

The other candidates, including GTA’s Amir Hamzah Abdul Rajak and Independents Datuk Jamaluddin Mohd Radzi and Mohd Nor Izzat Mohd Johari, were far behind with only three-figure votes.

In Gopeng, Tan Kar Hing also pulled ahead from the nearest competitor, polling 14,075 votes, while Perikatan’s Muhammad Farhan Abdul Rahim got 4,439. Barisan’s Cally Ting was third with 3,457 votes.

Of the eight parliamentary seats contested by DAP, they won seven with landslide victories.

As of press time, Barisan’s Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki was leading the race for Gerik with 1,630 votes, ahead of Pakatan-DAP’s Tarmizi Mohd Jam (1,419) and Perikatan’s Fathul Huzir Ayob (1,037).

Word on the ground was that Perikatan and Barisan are set to form the state government.

However, no official announcement has been made by the state Election Commission.

The state government can be formed with a simple majority of 30 state seats.

It is learned that DAP has so far won 18 of the 19 state seats contested, and was trailing Perikatan in the Changkat Jong seat.

As for PKR, it is all but confirmed that they have won the Teja, Simpang Pulai and Tualang Sekah state seats.

In the 14th General Election in 2018, Pakatan won 29 state seats while Barisan and PAS won 27 and three seats respectively.

Pakatan would later form the state government after getting the support from then Umno state assemblymen Datuk Zainol Fadzi Paharudin (Sungai Manik) and Datuk Nolee Ashilin Mohammed Radzi (Tualang Sekah), who later joined Bersatu.

The state government had in early 2020 collapsed after Bersatu pulled out of Pakatan.
