Focus on soft development for Permatang Pauh’s future

BUKIT MERTAJAM: A study has been commissioned on turning Permatang Pauh into a “liveable, sustainable and resilient constituency”, says Nurul Izzah Anwar.

The incumbent Permatang Pauh MP said Think City would conduct a baseline study on prioritising “soft development” along with preserving the area’s cultural identity and way of life.

“Soft development towards improving the social economy must be prioritised and not just mere infrastructure.

“It is crucial to ensure that no one is left behind. They should have access to basic needs such as education.

“There is a need for psychological support, among others, in the education sector to look into the needs of students.

“Since the Covid-19 pandemic, many students do not want to study in the normal scope. This has led to a break of interaction between teachers and students for emotional and moral support.

“To me, these are more important than infrastructure development,” said Nurul Izzah, 42, in response to claims that there had been a lack of infrastructure development in Permatang Pauh in recent years.

She said plans to construct the first boarding school in Penanti had been approved and it would be completed within two years.

“We have collaborated with MyKasih Foundation to provide food and schooling necessities to students via a cashless initiative.

“We are also encouraging those living in rural areas to adapt to technology. Tuition classes are being held at Yayasan Aman to support students in need of additional lessons and support.

“In December last year, the project to construct Masjid Mengkuang Titi costing RM4.5mil was also approved,” she added.

To show her appreciation for the dedication of teachers and to further aid them in teaching, Nurul Izzah had bought two interactive boards for SK Seberang Jaya and SMK Guar Perahu Indah.

The boards, costing RM16,000 each, were handed over to representatives of the schools by Central Seberang Prai district officer Kamarul Haizal Koderat at the district’s Land and District Office in Jalan Betek on Friday.

In the 15th General Election, Nurul is defending her seat under the Pakatan Harapan banner against Barisan Nasional’s Datuk Mohd Zaidi Mohd Said (Umno), Perikatan Nasional’s Muhammad Fawwaz Muhammad Jan (PAS) and Parti Bumiputera Perkasa Malaysia’s Nasir Othman under the Pejuang banner.

Nurul Izzah was Lembah Pantai MP from 2008 to 2018 before winning the Permatang Pauh seat in 2018.
