NILAI: A trailer lorry driver lost control of his vehicle on the North-South Expressway, crashing it through the guardrail and ploughing into oncoming vehicles.
The 43-year-old driver was flung out when his lorry smashed into another trailer lorry, three cars and a motorcycle coming in the opposite direction at km280 near Nilai at 11.35am.
The driver died at the scene while several others were hurt.
The accident, which happened on the southbound lane, forced traffic to a standstill as the lane was almost completely blocked by a lorry and two cars.
“The lorry driver, Muhammad Iqbal Kamarulzaman, from Klang is believed to have lost control of the lorry. He suffered serious bodily injuries and died at the scene,” said Nilai OCPD Supt Abdul Malik Hasim.
He said the lorry was heading from Seremban towards Nilai when the accident happened.
The 29-year-old driver of the other lorry suffered light injuries while five people in other vehicles were taken to the Tuanku Ja’afar Hospital for treatment.
The drivers of the two cars escaped unhurt.
Clips of the accident went viral with motorists heading south advised to avoid the stretch.
In one clip, the lorry can be seen heading north before going out of control and crashing the guardrail.
It then crashes into the other vehicles heading in the opposite direction.
The Malaysian Highway Authority, in a tweet, also advised motorists to use alternative routes as the accident had caused a 5km traffic jam on the southbound lane.
