Flood alert: 23 locations in mainland Penang identified as high risk areas


BUKIT MERTAJAM: A total of 23 locations on the Penang mainland has been identified as high-risk flood areas as the water level is on the rise.

The locations were Taman Tenang Berapit, Taman Seri Janggus Machang Bubok, Desa Damai, Kampung Baru Alma, Taman Impian, Taman Sukun, Taman Mangga, Taman Sentul, Kampung Dock, Taman Machang Bubok, Taman Pinggiran Alma, Taman Sejahtera, Taman Selamat, Taman Kota Permai, Taman Permai Jaya, Taman Pekaka, Taman Pinang, Jalan Tembikai, Taman Mutiara, Taman Jasa Intan, Taman Saujana Indah and Taman Jaya.

As of Friday (Nov 11) at 7.15pm, the rainfall at Machang Bubok is at 102mm.

It was at 74mm per hour as of 5.30pm.

Rain exceeding 60mm per hour is categorised as very heavy.

Meanwhile, Padang Lalang assemblyman Chong Eng said the ceramah by DAP female leaders which was originally scheduled on Friday (Nov 11) night has been cancelled due to the sudden heavy rain that caused flooding.

"Flash floods caught us off-guard, we have to work together to help the victims immediately.

"Many low-lying areas have experienced flash floods due to the heavy rain.

"The floods really happened during the election, as predicted by the Meteorology Department.

"At present, district officers, Irrigation and Drainage Department officials, Seberang Prai city councillors, and state legislators have all been dispatched to assist the victims to minimise the damage of the flood."
