Selangor Perikatan eyes Kuala Langat parliamentary seat

KLANG: Selangor Perikatan believes its candidate will be able to wrest the Kuala Langat parliamentary seat from Pakatan Harapan’s grip in GE15.

“We feel that both Pakatan and Barisan Nasional have fielded weak candidates who are from outside the area and so our chances are very good,” said Selangor PAS secretary Roslan Shahir.

The coalition is fielding Selangor PAS commissioner Datuk Dr Ahmad Yunus Hairi.

His main opponents in the six-cornered fight are Pakatan’s PKR candidate Manivannan Gowin and Barisan’s MIC candidate Datuk Mohana Muniandy.

The others are one each from Parti Rakyat Malaysia and Pejuang, as well as an Independent candidate.

Dr Ahmad Yunus is also an assemblyman for Sijangkang, a state seat under Kuala Langat.

Roslan said Dr Ahmad Yunus had an advantage over the others as he was a local boy who runs a clinic and a dialysis centre in the same constituency.

“He is well known and respected in the area and we are working on these points to secure a win for Perikatan,” said Roslan.

Selangor PAS, he added, had also fully activated its machinery to campaign in all 22 parliamentary constituencies in Selangor.

“We are actively campaigning in all the 22 parliamentary constituencies but are giving extra emphasis in certain areas, such as Kuala Langat, where we are confident we have an edge over our competitors,” said Roslan.

However, he said Perikatan was also aware of its shortcomings.

He explained that the Kota Raja parliamentary seat would be exceptionally difficult for Perikatan as it had less than 50% Malay voters.

“It is a predominantly Indian electorate and because of this our candidate will have a difficult time unless all the Malay votes come to him undivided,” said Roslan.

PAS’ Mohamed Diah Baharun is contesting there in an eight- cornered fight that includes Pakatan incumbent Mohamad Sabu.

The other dominant candidate is Barisan’s D. Kajendran.

According to Roslan, Mohamed Diah had contested for the same seat and lost in the last general election.
