PONTIAN: The Tanjung Piai parliamentary seat here is set to see a three-cornered fight between its incumbent MP Datuk Seri Dr Wee Jeck Seng and two new faces.

The MCA candidate, who is contesting under the Barisan Nasional ticket said that he will not be complacent despite being the Tanjung Piai MP for three terms.

"I will not take things for granted just because I am the incumbent and have been the Tanjung Piai MP for a total of three terms.

"I have many plans to improve the lives of the people here, especially on welfare and education. In order to do so, I must continue to work hard and defend my seat," he said,

Wee, who is a born and bred Tanjung Piai man, added that he wants to see further development in the area that could offer good job opportunities for locals.

He will be defending his seat against Malaysian United Democratic Alliance’s (Muda)'s Lim Wei Jiet and Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu)'s Najwah Halimah Ab Alim, who are both contesting for the first time.

Lim, who is a lawyer by profession, said that he hopes to offer the people of Tanjung Piai something fresh and new.

"It will be a challenge as we will be going against a three-term MP but we are confident and will do our best," said the Muda co-founder.

He added that he will be declaring his assets soon and hope that other candidates would do so as well.

Meanwhile, Najwah, who was Tekun Nasional Deputy chairman, said that she is unfazed by her competitors.

"We will see a lot of new and young voters casting their votes for the first time in this election and to me that is a good thing; they can decide on the leader they want," said Najwah, who is from Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu).

In the 14th General Election, Bersatu's Datuk Dr Md Farid Md Rafik won the seat with a 524 majority in a three-cornered fight.

Dr Md Farid passed away in September 2019, paving way for the Tanjung Piai by-election, which was held in November of the same year.

In the by-election, Wee won the Parliamentary seat with a 15,086 majority in a six-cornered fight.
