Liow is MCA candidate for Bentong

PETALING JAYA: Tan Sri Liow Tiong Lai will contest the Bentong parliamentary seat, a decision that was made by MCA about one-and-a-half years ago, says party president Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong.

Dr Wee said every MCA member had vowed to support Liow so that he could wrest back the Bentong seat in the 15th General Election.

“MCA has supported Liow since a-year-and-a-half ago. Liow is the most qualified MCA candidate for the Bentong seat,” he said in a statement yesterday.

Despite losing the Bentong seat in the 2018 general election, Dr Wee said Liow has remained loyal to the party and continued serving constituents in Bentong during the floods in December last year and the fire at Kampung Baru Karak in October last year.

“Liow has remained in the front line to assist in relocation and rebuilding efforts for victims,” he said.

And when the Covid-19 pandemic struck, he said Liow did his best in collecting funds and resources to assist the people.

Dr Wee also said Liow has maintained good relations with various associations and local organisations, as well as other Barisan Nasional component parties.

At the same time, Dr Wee also noted that there was a strong call by local voters for Liow to return as an MP in Bentong, given his contributions to the parliamentary constituency during his tenure as MP.

Meanwhile, Dr Wee described recent remarks made by DAP secretary general Anthony Loke on “shooting” Liow as being arrogant.

“It is sad that it came out from a leader who does not respect the democratic doctrine.

“All of the MCA members will give unwavering support to ensure Liow’s victory in Bentong, so he could implement incomplete plans and tasks, bring about prosperity to locals and ensure that development in that constituency is realigned to the right track,” said Dr Wee.

On Monday, Loke said DAP is currently “collecting bullets” against Liow.

Liow served as Bentong MP from 1999 to 2018.
