JOHOR BARU: It was a heart-wrenching scene to see a man crying out for his wife who was trapped in a burning car.
Nurul Nazihah Kamalul Arifin, 28, was one of the two people burnt to death after their cars burst into flames following a five-vehicle pile-up at the North-South Expressway (southbound) in Kulai here on Saturday.
Her brother Mohd Saufi Kamalul Arifin, 35, said their family was still trying to come to terms with the tragedy.
“We are traumatised, especially my parents and her husband. In the blink of an eye, we lost someone we loved so much.
“She was a loving sister,” he said when contacted.
Mohd Saufi said a cousin had told him about the accident.
“I just could not believe it. Later, I checked my phone and saw videos of her burning car (circulated on social media).
“It was heartbreaking, especially when I saw her husband crying out for her when the car was on fire,” he said.
Kulai OCPD Supt Tok Beng Yeow said in a statement yesterday that the collision happened at about 8.30pm on Saturday at KM45.7 of the highway.
“One of the lorries, which was heading towards Johor Baru from Ayer Hitam, changed lanes.
“A car on the same lane tried to avoid it but failed and hit it from the back.
“Two other cars and another lorry from the back then tried to avoid the collision but failed,” he said.
The three vehicles then burst into flames.
Supt Tok said the driver of the first lorry was not injured, while the driver of the lorry that burst into flames suffered light injuries.
“The driver of one of the cars died at the scene after his vehicle caught fire.
“A passenger of the other car that also caught on fire was killed while the driver suffered light injuries,” he said.
The identity of the second victim has yet to be confirmed as of press time.
Supt Tok said the driver of the car that was not on fire suffered light injuries.
