PETALING JAYA: PAS will use its “moon” logo in Kelantan, Terengganu and Kedah in the 15th General Election but may go with the Perikatan Nasional logo in other states.
Previously, the party had said that it wanted to use its own logo in all states as the Perikatan symbol was not well-known among its supporters.
“We will use the moon symbol in Terengganu, Kelantan and Kedah. For the other states, we will let them choose whatever symbol or the Perikatan symbol,” PAS president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang said in his weekly sermon in Marang, Terengganu, yesterday.
In the Johor and Melaka elections, PAS and Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) candidates had contested under the Perikatan logo.
Following dismal results in the two state elections, there were calls by the party grassroots to use its own logo in GE15
The Islamist’s party’s central election director Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor had explained that the top leadership discussed adopting a new logo as some PAS members were “allergic” to the colour blue, which reminds them of Umno and Barisan.
The Perikatan flag is also blue.
At the last Perikatan convention, PAS representatives from Terengganu and Kedah proposed using their own logo in their states.
They said this was because the political scenario in east coast states was different from elsewhere and using the PAS logo would give them a better chance of winning.
Meanwhile, the PAS president said it had “postponed” its planned cooperation with Barisan as there was “lack of clarity” in the coalition on the issue of corruption.
He claimed Barisan was also not strict in implementing Islamic teachings.
Abdul Hadi said many Umno leaders had approached him, asking PAS to cooperate with Barisan.
“I told them let me think first. We are not enemies, but there is some lack of clarity (kekeruhan).”
He explained that PAS decided to work with Perikatan to fight corruption.
“Although it will be easier if we go with Umno – we can win easier and have more supporters – we are not rushing,” he said.
PAS is set to clash with Umno in at least 27 parliamentary seats, most of them in Kelantan and Terengganu, in the general election.
On Thursday, after Abdul Hadi announced that PAS would continue its partnership with Perikatan in GE15, Umno president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said the decision was not surprising.
He stressed that Barisan would go solo in GE15.
