JOHOR BARU: Reminding the Election Commission (EC) to be fair is just another negative perception created by Johor DAP chief Liew Chin Tong despite the opposition having won the previous general election, says Datuk Nur Jazlan Mohamed.
The Johor Umno deputy chief said that questioning the fairness and neutrality of the EC is like questioning Pakatan Harapan's victory in the 14th General Election (GE14).
“The topic has been discussed years ago and then suddenly now he (Liew) is spouting about fairness and making claims that the EC is biased as it is elected by Barisan Nasional.
“Is their victory in GE14 also unfair?,” he said in a statement here on Wednesday (Oct 12).
Nur Jazlan said that Liew was suddenly trying to become a hero by requesting the EC to be neutral even though Pakatan had elected two EC members since 2018.
“For all the years that the EC has managed the election, there has never been any party that has been stopped from going on a campaign, public speech, or calling for votes as long as they adhere to the election regulations.
“I would like to remind him not to say rhetorical things like this every time the election comes,” he said, adding that Liew had forgotten that he had won the Perling assembly seat and Pakatan chairman Datuk Seri Salahuddin Ayub had won the Pulai MP seat due to the "unfair" system.
“All of this is just ‘wayang’ made by DAP and Pakatan because they know they will not win in the coming GE15.
“When they create this issue in the first place, they will have something to blame when they lose the election. They do not want to admit that people no longer believe in them.
"Even they have not made changes to the voting system during their 22-month reign," he said, adding that Pakatan leaders were probably too busy looking for excuses to keep their election promise.
On Oct 10, Liew was reported saying that federal, state, and local government agencies should practise administrative neutrality to demonstrate that the election process is free and fair.
He added that the Federal Government should immediately enter into a caretaker mode where no policy and financial decisions of consequence can be made until the next government is formed.
"All contesting parties and candidates should be treated fairly and equally.
"The voting public is watching and waiting for the victors to emerge from GE15 with legitimacy. No party or candidate should be seen as winning through unfair means," he said.
