KUCHING: A new district council will be set up in Gedong, about 88km from here, to facilitate development in the area.
Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said the formation of the Gedong district council was approved by the state cabinet three weeks ago.

This came after Gedong officially became a district on Dec 12, one of five new districts approved at the time along with Siburan, Sebuyau, Lingga and Pantu.
"The new district council will assist us to implement the development we have planned for Gedong.
"We will develop a new area across the river from Hulu Gedong to Simunjan, Samarahan, Sebuyau, Lingga and the coastal areas," Abang Johari said when closing the district-level Maulidur Rasul celebration in Gedong on Monday (Oct 10).
He said the plans would take time to implement, adding that the local community should play a part in contributing towards the development of the area.
