PETALING JAYA: Ministers and MPs have been told to stick to Perikatan Nasional’s stand of not having the general election when the country is facing various pressing cost-of-living issues against the backdrop of an impending north-east monsoon season.
Its chairman Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said the government needs to focus on preparations for floods and accelerate the country’s recovery from the Covid-19 pandemic instead.
He added that the 15th General Election (GE15) should not be held this year as the monsoon season is expected to bring floods, especially in the peninsula’s east coast states.
“Having an election during the floods will disrupt the smooth flow of the election and will be a hassle for the people,” said Muhyiddin, adding that the people are burdened by inflation, the high cost of goods, and the fall of the ringgit.
Muhyiddin said these issues should be given full attention by the government, especially in Budget 2023, and added that Perikatan’s Cabinet members have been told to deliver this stand in Cabinet meetings.
“All Perikatan MPs will also take a similar stand,” he said yesterday.
Likewise, PAS president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang said the revival of the economy and the impending monsoon season are factors to be considered before Parliament is dissolved.
He said PAS will continue to hold dialogues with all parties and stakeholders for the sake of the ummah (Muslim community).
“We need unity and should avoid altercations among us in order to defeat Pakatan Harapan,” Abdul Hadi posted on Facebook yesterday.
