PETALING JAYA: Datuk Seri Azmin Ali dares to face off with his former mentor should Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim contest in Gombak during GE15.
In fact, the Gombak MP implied that even Anwar’s wife or daughter is welcome to challenge him.
Although the challenge was directed at the PKR president, Azmin stopped short of naming Anwar or his family members.
“You are welcome to contest here. You can send your wife, daughter or even others. I will contest,” he said during Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia’s division meetings and its Selangor state election machinery yesterday.
Azmin was formerly PKR deputy president and is now a Bersatu supreme council member.
He also hit out at what he described were Anwar’s own betrayals to the people.
These included the failed “Kajang Move” which led to the ouster of the then mentri besar, the late Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim, along with the Port Dickson by-election, for Anwar’s re-entry into politics after being released from prison.
“Malaysians, please remember. History cannot be erased,” said Azmin who is also International and Trade Minister.
Anwar recently hinted that he would contest a seat held by one of the “traitors” to Pakatan Harapan in GE15.
“I have to pick areas held by traitors. This is a message that treachery in politics is not acceptable,” he said.
In February 2020, Azmin led an exodus of 10 MPs in an event dubbed the “Sheraton Move” that later saw the collapse of the Pakatan government after 22 months in power.
Among the “traitors” that Anwar is believed to be referring to are Azmin, Foreign Minister and Indera Mahkota MP Datuk Seri Saifuddin Abdullah and Segamat MP Datuk Seri Edmund Santhara Kumar, who is also Deputy Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister.
