JOHOR BARU: Residents and visitors within a 2km radius of Bandar Baru Uda near here are advised not to be alarmed when they hear sirens as the Civil Defence Force is running tests on its public warning system (PWS).
Johor APM director Asst Comm (PA) Kamal Mokhtar said the system, installed at the Johor Baru APM office in Bandar Baru Uda here, would be tested in stages from 2.30pm on Wednesday (Sept 21).
He said the siren, when sounded, could be heard by those within a 2km radius during the day – from Nong Chik to Taman Damansara Aliff – and even further at night.
“Another round of tests would be conducted at 8.30pm Wednesday to ensure that the siren could be heard within the (desired) range.
“The PWS, the only one currently installed in Johor, serves to alert residents and the public to disasters and emergencies such as floods, riots and air attacks.
“There are three types of siren warnings that will be sounded to alert the public to exit or enter a building, as well as to indicate the end of an emergency,” he told a press conference at the Johor Baru APM office.
ACP Kamal added that the force would be engaging with local communities to educate them about the functions of the PWS and how to tell the warning signals apart.
The PWS is also installed in other states throughout the country, he said.
