Penang Turf Club jockeys wear black armbands in honour of Queen Elizabeth II

GEORGE TOWN: As a tribute to Britain’s Queen Elizabeth II, who died on Sept 8, the jockeys at Penang Turf Club have worn black armbands.

The jockeys took part in Race 1 of the Penang September Meeting 2022.

Her Majesty was known for her lifelong passion for horse racing.

Penang Turf Club will also follow the state government in flying the state flag half-mast on Monday (Sept 19).

All government departments and agencies in Penang, Perak, Negri Sembilan and Selangor will fly flags at half-mast as a sign of respect for Queen Elizabeth II.

Penang and Negri Sembilan will keep the flag at half-mast on Monday, while Perak and Selangor did so for three days beginning Saturday (Sept 17).

The state funeral service of the Queen, who died at Balmoral Castle in Scotland after 70 years on the throne, will be held at Westminster Abbey on Monday.

Queen Elizabeth II, 96, was the United Kingdom’s longest reigning monarch and the second longest-reigning ruler in European history, after King Louis XIV of France.

During her reign, she visited Malaysia three times – in 1972 for a special visit; in 1989 in conjunction with the 11th Commonwealth Heads of Government meeting; and in 1998 for the 16th Commonwealth Games.
