Teen nabbed for performing motorcycle stunts on Penang highway

BUTTERWORTH: A teenager was caught performing stunts on his motorcycle in Central Seberang Prai here.

Central Seberang Prai OCPD Asst Comm Tan Cheng San said the 18-year-old was arrested for speeding and performing stunts including bending backwards and making zigzag lines while on his motorcycle on Friday (Sept 9).

"He was caught during our Ops Samseng at around 11pm on Friday along the Butterworth-Kulim Expressway from Central Seberang Prai to Bandar Perda.

"He will be held in remand until Sept 14 as the case is being investigated under Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for reckless driving, which carries a fine of between RM5,000 and RM15,000 and a jail term not exceeding five years upon conviction," he said during a press conference held at the Central Seberang Prai police headquarters in Bukit Mertajam on Monday (Sept 12).

ACP Tan said it was not easy to catch the teenager as they did not want him to realise they were tailing him.

"It is risky when you catch them as if they notice us, they will speed up and if we chase them there are chances of both him and us getting injured as well as other road users.

"We follow them slowly and keep tabs, only catching them when they stop," he said.

ACP Tan said during the same ops, they confiscated 23 motorcycles and issued 134 summonses for various reasons.

"The summonses were given out for those who did not have valid licenses, road tax, motorcycle modifications and other reasons.

"We even caught someone with ketum water," he said.

ACP Tan then warned of the dangers of carrying and consuming illegal substances.

"I urge the public to be more mindful as well when it comes to driving or riding your motorcycle.

"Do not engage in illegal activities like racing or speeding as it is clear that it is against the law and can endanger other road users and oneself," he said.
