KUALA LUMPUR: Three men believed to be members of a robbery gang targeting goldsmiths were nabbed in Kepong and Old Klang Road.
Kuala Lumpur police chief Comm Datuk Azmi Abu Kassim said a police patrol team from Kepong detained two men aged 42 and 43 at about 8.54pm at Bandar Manjalara on Sunday (Sept 4).
"A check of the suspects' car revealed two pistols with four 9mm bullets as well as a revolver with six .38 bullets. We also seized 18 bullets from the two suspects," he told a press conference at the Kuala Lumpur police headquarters on Tuesday (Sept 6).
Investigations showed that both suspects were getting ready to rob a nearby goldsmith when they were arrested, Comm Azmi said.
"Further investigation led police to a 47-year-old man at a house in Old Klang Road at about 1.15am on Tuesday. We believe he is the mastermind of the gang," he said.
Comm Azmi added that several items were seized from the house including RM129,300 cash and 39 packets filled with jewellery worth RM175,000.
"The mastermind has five previous cases in his criminal record, including one under the Firearms Act. All suspects have been remanded for seven days," he said.
Comm Azmi added that the police are investigating how long the gang has been operating.
"We will make further arrests if there are remnants of the gang still at large. We are also investigating how they got the pistols," he said.
Comm Azmi added that those with information on any criminal activity should contact the KL police hotline at 03-2115999 or any nearest police station.
"We notice there are spikes in crimes involving firearms in the city. We will step up operations in combating crimes with the cooperation of the public," he said.
