Fake booze resold at higher prices

JOHOR BARU: The police have arrested a 53-year-old man for selling duty-free liquor worth more than RM300,000 at a sundry shop at Jalan Riang Utama in Taman Gembira here.

Johor police chief Comm Datuk Kamarul Zaman Mamat said investigations found that the liquor and beer were to be sold at higher prices.

“For example, if the beer is sold around RM3.50 at the duty-free zone, they could mark it up to RM7.50 or RM8 at the sundry shop while the bottled liquor could be sold for up to RM170 a bottle,” he said at the Johor police headquarters here yesterday.

He said the police found 146 boxes containing 951 bottles of liquor and 6,168 cans of beer.

He added that the contraband liquor was fake and bore a counterfeit Customs Department QR code.

The premises, said Comm Kamarul Zaman, had been operating for at least three months and the 3,426 litres of confiscated beer and liquor were worth RM305,252.
