KOTA KINABALU: Rescuers had to be called in to help an elderly man who slipped and fell on his face while climbing Mount Kinabalu on Wednesday (Aug 31).
State Fire and Rescue Department assistant director of operations Misran Bisara said they were alerted about the incident at 10.05am.
He said a Mountain Search and Rescue (Mosar) team was dispatched together with mountain porters, as well as personnel from the Sabah Parks to locate the 60-year-old Malaysian at KM6 on the summit trail.
"As soon as they found him, the team gave the man an initial treatment on his injuries,” he said, when contacted on Thursday (Sept 1).
The team then escorted the man down to the Timpohon Gate, where the latter was then able to receive further treatment, he added.
In an unrelated incident, firemen had to be called in to help cut off a ring that was stuck on a finger of a 16-year-old boy in the Tawau east coast district later the same day.
Misran said they had to bring special sawing equipment after being notified by staff from the Tawau Hospital over the incident at 4.48pm.
He said the firemen took about an hour to release the ring from the boy’s finger.
In another incident involving a minor, firemen helped free a one-year-old girl who was accidentally locked in a vehicle in southwestern Sipitang district at 6.40pm.
Misran said it only took them less than 20 minutes to prise open the door using a special tool, adding the rescue operation ended at 7.08pm.
