Covid-19: Sarawak sees rise in cases for three weeks in a row

SIBU: Sarawak recorded an increase in Covid-19 cases for three consecutive weeks.

State Health Department director, Dr Ooi Choo Huck in a statement on Sunday (Aug 28), said for the epidemiological Week 31/2022 (July 31 to Aug 6) there were 601 cases; Epidemiological Week 32/2022 (Aug 7 to 13), 930 cases; and Epidemiology Week 33/2022 (Aug 14 to 20), 806 cases.

However, the death rate he said remains low, at one per one million population for the last 14 days.

"The rate of ICU bed utilisation for Covid-19 patients as of Aug 25 is 7.2%, where four patients required respiratory assistance and one did not," he said.

As of Aug 25, the vaccination status for the second dose coverage was 92% (1,901,805 people), aged 18 and above.

"For teenagers 12 to 17 years old is 92.8% (268,359 people) and 89.6% (256,126 people) among children aged 5 to 11 years," said Dr Ooi.

As of now, the entire population of the state who have received the second dose was 85.9% (2,426,406 people).

"As of Aug 20, 99% of the state population who were eligible for the first booster dose, had received it.

"However, there are 185,815 people who have not yet received the first booster dose of the vaccine.

"A total of 35,169 people, (7.1%) who were eligible, received a second booster dose," he added.

The department, he said, urged all eligible individuals to come forward to get their first and second booster of the vaccine to reduce the spread of the disease.

"The public is also advised not to be complacent and to remain vigilant.

"Make sure health recommendations and advice are practised at all times and used as new habits in daily life," he said.

He added that although the relaxation of the SOP had been given, the department hoped that people would remain vigilant as the SARS-CoV-2 virus was still among us.

Individuals who had not received the vaccine and had not been infected with Covid-19 were most at risk of infection, he warned.
