Kulai flood victims fear recurrence

MORE than 300 residents in Kulai, Johor, continue to suffer heavy losses due to floods after the area was hit by two hours of rain a year ago, Makkal Osai reported.

G. Visalatchi, from Taman Aman, said the water level at their houses reached more than a metre high following the storm.

The family returned home several hours later when the water receded, only to find extensive damage to their belongings.

She and her four children only managed to save some important documents.

Selvam, a 54-year-old resident, said that people are afraid that the area will flood again during the monsoon season.

He claimed that the housing area, which was developed 30 years ago, has been facing flood issues for the past 10 years.

K. Selvadurai said that the flooding was caused by nearby building projects and bad drainage in their neighbourhood.

Kulai MIC chief S. Suppayah said the affected families received RM150 each after the floods last year, adding that so far, no assistance has been provided for them after the latest flood-related incident.
