Downpour leads to flash floods in S’gor, Johor

PETALING JAYA: Flash floods hit a few places in Selangor and Johor following downpours in the evening.

Those affected were racing against the rising water by moving their vehicles to higher grounds, while some moved their furniture to the upper floors of their homes.

A video uploaded on social media showed cars driving on a flooded road in the flood-prone Taman Sri Muda in Shah Alam, Selangor.

“Mind you guys, every time there is heavy rain, Sri Muda residents start to worry, with some moving their cars to higher ground,” warned one Twitter user.

Another user said: “My brother is in panic mode. Moving furniture and cars out! Lesson learnt. Hoping for the rain to stop.”

When contacted yesterday, Taman Sri Muda 2 Residents Association (Section 25) chairman Mogan Thangavelu said they were worried about the flood situation.

“The drains are full but the water is still flowing. Residents are moving their cars to higher areas,” he said, adding that some have also moved their furniture to the higher floors.

Selangor Fire and Rescue Department director Norazam Khamis said a team of seven firefighters had been dispatched to Sri Muda.

“At the same time, two boats are being mobilised there along with six more men,” he said, adding that current surveillance showed that water had risen to around 30cm in depth.

Also in Selangor, Shah Alam police said there was some stagnant water in front of Dewan Kemuning Utama. He said clogged drains were the cause.

In Johor, several areas in Kulai and Johor Baru were also inundated with water for several hours following a downpour that started around 1pm.

According to the Johor Civil Defence Force (APM), the affected areas included Kampung Maju Jaya in Johor Baru as well as Taman Aman and Kampung Jaya Sepakat in Kulai.
